15 hours free childcare
Eligible 2-year-olds can get 15 hours of funded childcare per week (38 weeks per year, term time). This has been expanded to younger children in stages – check GOV.UK – Free childcare for 2 to 4 year olds for age thresholds and eligibility.
30 hours free childcare
Working parents of 3- and 4-year-olds may qualify for 30 hours per week (1,140 hours per year). Both parents usually need to earn a minimum amount and under an upper limit. Self-employed and single parents have specific rules. Full eligibility is on GOV.UK.
How to apply
Apply online at GOV.UK – Apply for 30 hours free childcare. You receive a code to give to your childcare provider. You must reconfirm eligibility periodically. Apply before the term you want to use the hours – deadlines apply.
What's not covered
Funding typically covers the childcare place only. Meals, nappies, and extras may incur additional charges. Not all nurseries or childminders offer funded places – ask when you visit. See childcare costs in Swindon for the full picture.
