How nursery fees are charged
Nurseries may charge by the hour, half-day, or full day. Some have a minimum number of sessions. Fees often differ for under-twos and over-twos. Ask for a clear breakdown: what’s included (meals, nappies, trips) and what’s extra. Compare like for like when looking at several settings.
Funded (free) hours
Eligible children can receive funded early years hours. The number of hours and eligibility criteria are set by government and can change – check GOV.UK. Nurseries that offer funded places receive funding from the local authority; they may charge a "top-up" for meals or additional hours. Ask each nursery how they apply funded hours and what you’ll pay on top.
What to ask when visiting
Request a fee schedule, availability, and how they handle funded hours. Check opening times and whether they offer term-time only or year-round care. Look at the latest Ofsted report. For a broader view of childcare costs and support, see childcare costs in Swindon.
