Types of childcare
Nurseries offer full- or part-day care, often for 0–5s. Childminders look after children in their own home, often in smaller groups. After-school and holiday clubs cover school-age children. Fees vary by provider, location, and hours. See our guide to nursery fees in Swindon for more on nurseries specifically.
Funded (free) hours
Eligible children can get funded early years hours (e.g. 15 or 30 hours per week in term time, depending on age and eligibility). Rules and eligibility change – check GOV.UK – Help with childcare costs for the current scheme. Funding may not cover extras (meals, nappies), so ask providers what’s included.
Tax-Free Childcare and Universal Credit
Tax-Free Childcare can top up what you pay into a childcare account. Universal Credit can include a childcare element. Eligibility depends on income and circumstances. Use the GOV.UK childcare calculator to see what you might get.
What to budget
Get quotes from several nurseries or childminders. Ask about hourly/daily rates, minimum sessions, and any extras. Factor in term-time only vs year-round, and whether you need wraparound or holiday cover. Funding can significantly reduce the amount you pay – always check your eligibility.
