What's on your bill?
Your bill typically includes: water supply (drinking water) and sewerage (wastewater and often surface water drainage). Charges are set every five years by Ofwat. Thames Water's website and your bill show the current rates – pence per cubic metre (or per litre) for metered customers, and a charge based on rateable value for unmetered properties.
Metered vs unmetered
If you have a water meter, you pay for the volume you use plus a standing charge. If you don't have a meter, your charge is usually based on the old rateable value of your property. Many households can request a meter to be fitted – if you use less water than the unmetered charge assumes, a meter can reduce your bill. Contact Thames Water to check your status and request a meter.
How to pay
You can pay by direct debit, online, or by other methods offered by Thames Water. Setting up a direct debit often comes with a discount. If you're struggling to pay, contact Thames Water – they must help you with a payment plan and may have schemes for those on low incomes.
Complaints and disputes
If you disagree with your bill or the service you've received, raise it with Thames Water first. If you're not satisfied, you can escalate to the Consumer Council for Water (CCWater).
