Council Tax bands in Swindon

Your bill depends on which band your property is in (A–H). Bands are set by the Valuation Office Agency based on the property's value as at 1 April 1991. Charges also vary by parish because of parish precepts. The table below shows typical Swindon Borough amounts for 2024/25 – for your exact figure and parish breakdown, see Swindon Borough Council's Council Tax bands and charges by parish.

BandAnnual (approx.)Monthly (approx.)
A£1,465£122
B£1,710£143
C£1,954£163
D£2,198£183
E£2,686£224

H£4,396£366

How Council Tax is calculated

Swindon Borough Council sets a charge for Band D. Other bands are a fixed proportion of that (e.g. Band A is 6/9 of Band D, Band H is 18/9). Parish and town councils add a precept, so the total you pay depends on where in the borough you live. Your bill may also include precepts for the police and fire authority. See Your Council Tax explained on the council website for the current year's breakdown.

Who pays Council Tax?

You're usually liable for Council Tax if you're 18 or older and the property is your sole or main residence. New residents can register online to receive an account number. You can view and manage your account online. Council Tax Support is available for those on low income – check the council website for eligibility.

Discounts and reductions

Single person discount

If only one adult lives in the property, you can get a 25% discount. Apply via the council website.

Disability reduction

A reduction is available if the property has been adapted to meet the needs of a disabled resident. The reduction equals the difference between your band and the band below. Band A properties have been eligible since April 2000.

Severe mental impairment

You may qualify for a full or partial reduction if you or someone living with you is registered as severely mentally impaired and entitled to a qualifying benefit.

Disregarded people

Certain people don't count toward Council Tax, which can result in a discount. These include qualifying students and student nurses, people aged 18+ receiving child benefit, long-term hospital patients, care home residents, and others. See the council's discounts page for the full list.

Annexes

Separately assessed annexes occupied by the main home resident or a close relative may qualify for a discount.

Important

Apply promptly when your circumstances apply – discounts and exemptions usually cannot be awarded retrospectively. You must tell the council if you no longer qualify, or you may face a fine.
