Register with a veterinary practice
Most pets in Swindon are registered with a local vet in much the same way as you register with a GP surgery. You choose a practice, book a first appointment, and keep their phone number and opening hours somewhere easy to find at home and on your phone.
The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) maintains Find a Vet so you can search by postcode for practices in and around Swindon. That is a neutral way to shortlist practices before you compare opening hours, services, and fees on each practice\'s own website.
Normal hours versus out of hours
Small animal practices often share or buy an out-of-hours service. That means the building you visit in the day may not be the same place you are directed to at night or on Sundays. Your practice leaflet, website, or answerphone message should say exactly which number to ring when the surgery is closed.
Emergency vet providers operate with triage: you will be asked about breathing, bleeding, collapse, poisoning, or road traffic injury. That helps them prepare and advise whether you should travel immediately.
Serious injury or cruelty
If you find a wild animal or pet in distress on the road, keep yourself safe first. The RSPCA has advice on reporting cruelty and injured animals: rspca.org.uk. For stray dogs on the highway, Swindon Borough Council's environmental team may also be relevant depending on the situation.
Microchipping and the law
Dogs in the UK must be microchipped and registered on a compliant database by eight weeks old, with keeper details kept up to date. From 10 June 2024, cats in England must be microchipped and registered by twenty weeks of age. Check GOV.UK microchipping your cat for the current rules.
Your vet can implant a chip and explain how to update your address when you move within Swindon or further away.
