When should I call NHS 111?
Call 111 free from a landline or mobile when you need medical help quickly but it is not life-threatening. Examples can include worsening fever in a child, a painful minor injury, or uncertainty about whether you should go to hospital. The adviser may book you into an out-of-hours GP service, suggest self-care, or direct you to a pharmacy.
You can also use 111 online for some symptoms. If online triage tells you to ring 111, do so.
When should I call 999 instead?
Use 999 for emergencies: chest pain suggestive of a heart attack, stroke symptoms, severe bleeding, crushing injuries, or if someone is unconscious and not breathing normally. If in doubt and harm is immediate, choose 999.
Finding a pharmacy in Swindon
The NHS Find a pharmacy tool lets you search by postcode. It shows opening times where pharmacies have supplied data, including some bank holiday arrangements. Always phone ahead for urgent supply of a regular medicine so the pharmacy can check stock.
Urgent dental care
Severe toothache, swelling spreading toward the eye, trauma, or bleeding after an extraction need urgent attention. NHS England commissions urgent dental services; access is usually through 111 so you are directed to the right on-call dentist. Our dentists in Swindon article covers routine NHS and private registration.
Great Western Hospital
For hospital services, opening times, and how A&E works, read our Great Western Hospital guide. A&E is for emergencies, not for routine prescription queries.
