M4 motorway and driving from Swindon Junctions, traffic and tips

Swindon sits a few miles south of the M4 corridor. For many residents the motorway is the main link to London and Heathrow to the east, and to Bristol, South Wales, and the West Country to the west. This page explains the two junctions people use most often, how to check live traffic safely, and where to read more on The Swindon Post about parking and public transport.

Junction 15 and junction 16

Junction 15 serves the A419 towards Swindon, Marlborough, and the Cotswolds. It is the usual route for Swindon traffic joining the M4. Junction 16 serves Royal Wootton Bassett, Cricklade, and the A3102 towards north Swindon. Which is quicker on a given day depends on your start point, roadworks, and time of day.

Both junctions can queue at peak times, especially where slip roads merge with busy A-roads. Allow extra time for school runs and Friday afternoons.

Live traffic and roadworks

Closures, contraflows, and speed restrictions change week by week. National Highways publishes live traffic information for England\'s strategic road network. Use Traffic England or the official National Highways X (Twitter) feeds before you set off, not while driving.

Swindon Borough Council publishes notices for major local road schemes inside the borough. Those can feed traffic onto the A419 and towards the M4 even when the motorway itself is clear. For a single bookmark that also covers town roadworks and One.Network, see our roadworks and traffic alerts for Swindon hub.

Park and ride and the train

If the M4 is blocked, many commuters switch to Great Western Railway from Swindon station. See train times to London, station parking, and parking in Swindon for the full picture.

Breaking down on the motorway

If you break down, National Highways advice is to leave the motorway at the next junction or pull into an emergency area or hard shoulder where one exists, stay away from moving traffic, and call for help using an emergency phone or your mobile with location details. Highways England and motoring clubs publish checklists for winter driving and long journeys.
