How fuel prices work
Pump prices reflect wholesale costs, duty, VAT, and retailer margin. Swindon forecourts set their own prices, so a supermarket on the edge of town can be well below a branded site or the motorway. For the week of 12 October 2026, a compilation of the UK government's Fuel Finder data put the national average at 174.4p a litre for unleaded and 199.5p for standard diesel. That is a UK average, not a Swindon pump price. The RAC Foundation paused its weekly fuel sheet on 13 October 2026 while it updates its method, so this figure is not an RAC average.
