Who gets free NHS eye tests?

Eye tests are free for: under-16s (or under-19 in full-time education), over-60s, diabetics, those at risk of glaucoma (e.g. over-40 with family history), and people on certain benefits. See NHS optical vouchers for full eligibility. Others pay around £25–30 for a test (prices vary).

Where to find opticians

Swindon town centre has Specsavers, Boots Opticians, Vision Express, and others in The Brunel and Regent Circus. Old Town and outlying areas have independents and smaller chains. Search "opticians Swindon" or use the Venues section when optician listings are available.

Glasses and contact lenses

NHS vouchers help toward the cost of glasses for eligible people. Children and those on low incomes may get vouchers. Otherwise you pay for frames and lenses. Many opticians offer two-for-one or discounts on first pairs. Contact lens fitting is usually a separate charge.
