Dog fouling fines in Swindon

In Swindon you must clear up after your dog in public places. Failing to do so can result in a fixed penalty notice (FPN) or prosecution. The council can use Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs) to enforce dog control, including fouling. This guide explains the rules and penalties.

The rule

You must pick up your dog’s mess and dispose of it properly (e.g. in a dog bin or your own bin). This applies on streets, parks, footpaths, and other public areas. Letting your dog foul and walking away without clearing up is an offence that can be enforced with a fixed penalty (often around £80 if paid early) or a higher fine if prosecuted in court.

PSPOs and designated areas

Swindon Borough Council may have Public Space Protection Orders that require dog owners to clear up and may include other rules (e.g. dogs on leads in certain areas). Check the council’s environmental health or dog control pages for the current PSPOs and maps. Dog fouling can also be reported; the council may use evidence to take action where they can identify the owner.

Reporting dog fouling

You can report persistent dog fouling in an area or an incident you witnessed via the council. See Report a problem for how to contact the council. For dog-friendly places to walk your dog responsibly, see dog-friendly Swindon.
