Enclosed spaces – the law
Under the Health Act 2006, smoking is not allowed in enclosed or substantially enclosed public places and workplaces. That includes pubs, restaurants, offices, shops, and public transport. Premises must display no-smoking signs. Breaking the law can lead to fines for the smoker and, in some cases, the premises. This applies everywhere in England, including Swindon.
Outdoor areas
There is no general ban on smoking in the open air (e.g. on the street). Some councils have introduced no-smoking rules in specific outdoor areas they control – e.g. children’s play areas, outside council buildings, or in parks. Swindon Borough Council may have such policies; check their website for any designated smoke-free zones. Private premises (e.g. stadiums, hospital grounds) can also set their own no-smoking areas.
Vaping
E-cigarettes (vaping) are not covered by the smoke-free law in the same way, but many venues and employers have their own policies that treat vaping like smoking indoors. Check the venue or workplace rules.
