How to compare energy deals
Use an Ofgem-accredited comparison site or compare directly with suppliers. You’ll need your postcode, current usage (or a recent bill), and payment method. The cheapest deal for one household may not be for another – it depends on how much gas and electricity you use. Compare the estimated annual cost, not just the unit rate. Check for exit fees and contract length.
Fixed vs variable
Fixed tariffs lock in unit rates and standing charge for a set period; variable tariffs can go up or down. When the market is volatile, fixed deals may be more or less expensive than staying on a variable tariff. Read the terms and consider how long you’re locking in for.
Switching
Your new supplier handles the switch. There’s no break in supply. If you’re in credit with your old supplier, you’ll get a refund. Give meter readings so your final bill is accurate. See energy suppliers in Swindon and average energy bills in Swindon for more context.
When switching might not save
If you’re on a competitive fixed deal, switching early may incur exit fees. If the market is tight, the price cap (standard variable) might be similar to or cheaper than some fixed offers. Always do the maths for your own usage.
